COMMON CORE STANDARDS

Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science & Technical Subjects

Reading, Grades 9-10 

RST.9-10.6  Analyze the author’s purpose in providing an explanation, describing a procedure, or discussing an experiment in a text, defining the question the author seeks to address.

RST.9-10.7 Translate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text into visual form (e.g., a table or chart) and translate information expressed visually or mathematically (e.g., in an equation) into words.

Writing, Grades 9-10 

WHST.9-10.l Write arguments focused on discipline-specific content.

WHST.9-10.2 Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/ experiments, or technical processes.

DESCRIPTION OF UNIT

In this unit “Banking and Finance” (Unit 4)  from Mississippi State University, students will understand that the American Banking System contributes to the stability of our economy and will understand the relationship between ethics and compliance.  Students are asked to show the effects of globalization and technology on banking and the causes of consolidation and regulatory burden.

CAUTIONS

The student activities may be modified to reflect the grade level of the class and prior knowledge. The Connecticut Business and Finance Technology Finance and Banking Standards have been aligned to Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects.

RATIONALE FOR SELECTION

The teaching strategies in this unit focus on the literacy standards by utilizing student activities that re-enforce reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in the banking and finance content area.  For example, students are asked to first research the history of American business, investigate several major business scandals and document the commonalities and differences among them.  Then, they are asked to write a set of ethical guidelines or code of ethics that might serve to prevent future breaches of business ethics.
