DESCRIPTION OF UNIT
This unit “Fractions in Everyday Life” from the NYC DOE has these objectives: Language Objective(s): Students will use academic language to: (a) describe equivalent fractions, improper fractions and mixed fractions. (b) compare fractions (c) describe methods for adding and subtracting fractions. (d) explain their mathematical reasoning.
Content Objectives: Students will: (a) expand their conceptual understanding of fractions as numbers (b) use their understanding of fractions and equivalent fractions to solve fraction addition and subtraction problems (c) use their understanding of fractions and equivalent fractions to solve “real world” problems involving fractions.
Connecticut teachers should be aware that the unit is considered a high quality resource with the following suggestions:

RATIONALE FOR SELECTION
The unit centers on the major work/ concepts of the grade. The unit provides crucial guidance for classroom teachers by unpacking and addressing the linguistic access needs of English Language Learners. This provides a valuable distinction between vocabulary and language functions needed to provide entry points to the math content. Both need to be clarified to ensure comprehension and to avoid misunderstanding. This can be done by introducing and/or reviewing the most essential vocabulary words/phrases and language functions in context and with concrete models, when applicable.
