DESCRIPTION OF LESSON

This K-2 lesson titled “Illuminated Calligrams” authored by the J. Paul Getty Museum Education Staff is intended to be completed in two to four 30-minute sessions of ELA/Literacy and Visual Arts instruction. In this lesson set, students examine different pieces of poetry and the role of calligrams in poetry as they practice letters of the alphabet and the meaning of nouns. They learn to identify, compare, and use different artistic media in works of art. In the culminating activity, students individually create a calligram for a class alphabet book.

CAUTIONS

Connecticut teachers are cautioned that while assessment guidelines are included, a CCSS-aligned rubric that provides sufficient guidance for interpreting student performance in all lesson standards will need to be developed. Common Core Standards have been added to the list above for Grade 2 to correspond to the standards targeted in Kindergarten and Grade 1.
