DESCRIPTION OF UNIT
This 4-5 week unit “Fun in the Snow with Max and Ruby” from the NYC Dept. of Education is designed to introduce students to the operations of addition and subtraction, and to provide students the opportunity to apply these operations. Throughout the unit, students will model by counting all or taking away, and counting on. Guided practice with these methods will lead to growth in Grade 1 and fluency and precision in Grade 2. The unit is designed with an initial assessment task, a formative assessment task, and a final performance task. This unit is designed to accompany the curriculum a teacher currently uses to teach the topics listed. The elements in the unit will provide activities to foster formative assessment practices, conceptual understanding and non-routine problem solving.
Connecticut teachers should be aware that the unit is considered a high quality resource with the following suggestions:
- Teachers may use this unit outline as presented or integrate parts of this unit into a related pre-existing curriculum unit.
- Guidance for differentiation and extensions are included (particularly, accommodations for assessment) however teachers will have to develop differentiated instruction at the lesson level.
- Application of math concepts is limited to game based activities.
RATIONALE FOR SELECTION
